Joseph felt he had never been so tired in all his life. He laid in the bed of what was supposed to be his future in-law’s home. But now his troubled mind could only think about the bill of divorce he would issue to his young bride. He had fallen deeply in love with Mary.

I thought I knew her character...How could I have been so wrong?.. These thoughts kept rolling over and over in his mind until his head hurt. Finally, his eyes grew heavy and he fell into a deep sleep.

Radiant intense light filled Joseph’s dream. He heard the brush of wings and could just see the outline of the angel of the Lord who said to him:

“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

Matthew 1:20-21

He slept peacefully the rest of the night. He didn’t hear the rooster announce the new day, nor did notice the clatter of the homeowners in the next room.

“I thought Joseph was going to leave early,” Mary’s mother said to her husband.

“That was my understanding as well,” he answered.

“It’s getting late in the morning, perhaps you should go into his room and check on him.”

Mary’s father agreed with the nod of his head. He tapped on the guest room door and slowly opened it.

“Joseph?” he called out.

He peered around the door and saw Joseph lying on his side breathing deep breaths of sleep. He walked to Joseph’s beside, bent over and placed his hand on Joseph’s shoulder.

“Joseph, Joseph. Wake up!”

Joseph, roused from his slumber, sat up in bed, looked around the room and then he saw who had awakened him. Mary’s father thought he saw Joseph smiling as he woke.

“Joseph? Are you okay?” Mary’s father asked.

Joseph stood and faced his father-in-law, his bare feet on the stone floor. With his hand he brushed back the hair that fell forward over his face. Now, Mary’s father could see Joseph’s face more clearly. Not only was he smiling, his face seemed to glow with jubilance.

Joseph reached forward and grasped both shoulders of the man that stood before him and said, “I am much better than okay! You won’t believe what happened.”

Mary’s father just stood there waiting for Joseph to say more. He could not understand what could have happened overnight that would make such a change in Joseph’s demeanor.

“Please, go now. I must clean up and put on the best clothes that I brought. Get your wife and my betrothed and meet with me in one hour,” Joseph said.

Mary’s father did not understand, but he was ushered out of the guest room so fast he did not have time to gather his confused thoughts to question Joseph. Before he knew it, the door was closed tight and he was on the outside of it. He shook his head from side to side as he turned to obey Joseph’s instructions.

An hour later, Joseph entered the kitchen. The first face he saw was that of his beloved Mary. His heart skipped in renewed hope of their future together. There was so much to talk about. Where would he start?

“Mary,” Joseph smiled as he said her name. “Tell me exactly what has happened to you.”

Mary looked around at her mother and father and back at Joseph. She began telling him about the brilliant light and how frightened she was. She relayed every detail of Gabriel’s message from the Lord and then she tried to explain the feeling of the Lord’s anointing upon her.

“I believe you Mary. I believe every single word,” Joseph said. “I didn’t at first though, but God has changed that. He sent His angel to me last night in a dream.” Joseph turned to look at Mary’s parents. “It is true. What is conceived in Mary is of the Holy Spirit.”

Mary’s father spoke up and asked, “Joseph what will you do?”

“I will take Mary to our home as soon as possible, but I still have much work to do before it will be ready. There is not a suitable place at my house for her to stay before I finish the work. Since I have returned here, to the home of my betrothed, people will expect that I will take Mary back with me. Is there somewhere she can go until our home is ready?”

Mary’s mother immediately spoke up, “yes, she can stay with my second cousin Elizabeth. I’m sure she would be more than welcome there. I’ll send off a message right away.”

Mary’s mother left room and wrote the following letter to her cousin Elizabeth:

Dear Elizabeth,
It seems the Lord's angels have been very busy lately. We were astonished when you wrote us of your pregnancy and how it was foretold to Zacharias by the Lord's angel Gabriel. The Lord God has sent Gabriel on another mission. This time to our Mary. She is with child, conceived in her by the Holy Spirit. We know not how, but ours is not to question, but to believe.

Although, I must confess, we were all as unbelieving as Zacharias was, when he was told that you would have a child in your advancing age. Forgive me cousin, you know I mean no scorn. We could not believe Mary could be with child in a virgin capacity. Joseph was devastated and intended to divorce her quietly until, he too, was visited by an angel.

I am in need to send Mary to you. She will disclose to you and Zacharias all that has occurred when she arrives. Joseph along with Gad and Gad's daughter Susanna will accompany Mary to your home.

The letter was sent immediately. Joseph and Mary along with Gad and Susanna left in haste shortly after gathering her belongings. The four arrived in the hill country that evening and was greeted by Zacharias’ servant who took their belongings and showed them into the house. Mary entered the home first with Joseph behind her and Gad and Susanna following. The sight of  Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary was astonishing to Joseph.

“Elizabeth, I am so happy to see you,” greeted Mary.

And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said,

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.”

Luke 1:41-45

And Mary said:

“My soul magnifies the Lord,

And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.

For He has regarded the lowly state of his maidservant;

For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.

For He who is mighty has done great things for me,

And holy is His name.

And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.

He has shown strength with His arm;

He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He has put down the mighty from their thrones,

And exalted the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

And the rich He has sent away empty.

He has helped His servant Israel,

In remembrance of His mercy,

As He spoke to our fathers,

To Abraham and to his seed forever.”

Luke 1:46-55
